Shopify vs Theme issues

Shopify provides the core aspects of your business and online store, including: products, collections, pages, cart and checkout functionality, inventory and order management, discounts, payments, customers, and more. Shopify settings are found in the admin dashboard (see guide ↗). Shopify issues are related to how your site functions as an online store.

Themes modify the layout and style of your online store. Themes provide templates and features sections to customize your store's pages. Theme features are customized in your theme editor. Theme issues relate to the appearance and layout of your site.


Steps to take when you encounter an issue on your site:

  1. First, identify whether your issue is Shopify or theme related.

It is most likely a Shopify issue, if it is about:

  • payment options;
  • local pickup;
  • dynamic checkout button;
  • contact form;
  • filters and sorting;
  • taxes and shipping message;
  • relates to how your store functions as an online store.

It is most likely a Theme issue, if it is about:

  • appearance and layout of your site.
  1. Search Shopify ↗ or theme manuals ↗ based on the issue determined in step one.
  2. Install an unmodified copy of the theme to test whether an issue is theme-related.
  3. Test Shopify's free theme Dawn to see if an issue is platform-related.
  4. If the issues continues, you can contact Shopify support ↗ or Theme support by clicking Help button in the bottom right corner.
